Every January, Community Council conducts the winter Point In Time (PIT) Count, a one‑day “snapshot” of what homelessness looks like in our community.
The count identifies the number of people currently experiencing homelessness—those staying in shelters, living in places not meant for human habitation, staying in local motels, or living on the streets. Individuals, families, children, and youth experiencing homelessness in our own neighborhoods are included.
This effort helps us assess how well local programs are meeting community needs and identify emerging gaps. The PIT Count is conducted nationwide, and the information is provided to HUD for the annual report to Congress on the state of homelessness in the United States.
Volunteers play a vital role each year by helping to:- Assist with the street count on one specific day in January
- Collect surveys from organizations serving people experiencing homelessness
- Make phone calls to gather information the week before, during, and after the count
